How the split works

Each expense is divided between everyone in whole cents. Then the people who are owed are paired with the people who owe.

  1. Each share = the expense divided by the number of people, rounded down to the cent
  2. Leftover cents go one each to the first people in your crew list
  3. Balance = what you paid minus your shares
  4. Payments go from negative balances to positive ones until everyone is even

Shares when an amount doesn't divide evenly

No cent is lost or invented. The first people in the list pay one cent more.

When not everyone shares an expense

This splitter shares every expense with the whole crew. In AfterHours you choose who shares each expense, so a taxi for two stays between those two.

Edge cases

A few things the splitter handles on purpose.

  • Amounts take up to two decimals. Commas are not accepted, so 1,000 is ambiguous and ignored.
  • Repeated names count once, and the crew is capped at 16 people.
  • With one person there is nothing to split, so the result asks for a second name.

Questions about splitting a night out

Does the splitter send money?

No. It only suggests who pays whom. Pay each other however your crew usually does.

Why does one person pay a cent more?

An amount like 100.00 can't split into three equal whole cents. The first people in your list cover the extra cent, so the total stays exact.

Can I save the split?

The splitter keeps nothing. In AfterHours your night, crew and expenses stay on your phone and you can share the split as text.

Keep the split with the plan

AfterHours keeps the crew budget with the plan, lets you choose who shares each expense and shares the split when the night is over.
